Wow do I ever have a lot to write about. If you are uncomfortable reading about poop. I'd suggest you skip this post!
These last few days have been a whirlwind that we are finally spinning out of. I am starting to feel some relief.
Rewind to thursday night, Pea was having problems going poop, she was holding it with all her might. All day I was feeding her prune juice, flax seed, oranges, pears anything I could think of that would make her go but she just wouldn't. As the night progressed things got worse and worse and the screaming got worse. We were debating taking her to emerg but then she fell asleep in my arms at 10 pm. We all went to sleep exhausted. At 2 am she woke up screaming to get out of the room, when I sat up with her all she could scream was "POOP" her face was bright red and she was so tense. We tried to relax her and get her in a warm bath but she wouldn't get in. For an hour we tried to calm her and get her to go but it was hopeless. Then she started to throw up on me. As soon as I saw her throw up I decided we should go to the hospital so we threw our coats and shoes on and rushed up there. To make a long story short she ended up having to have a suppository, which was awful to watch and totally not something we had wanted for her, but at 3 am when your child is unconsolable you just want to make things better for them. The experience was tramautic for her and as soon as we got home we went to bed and slept from 6-9.
When we awoke she was still miserable and in pain and had only had a small poop so we decided to see if our doctor was at the walk in clinic. The walk in clinic was super busy and Pea was nervous being in there so Daddy and her climbed the stairs in the hallway while we waited for the doctor. She went 3 times while doing that, but each time she would scream and try her best to hold it. We talked to the doctor (who was not our family doc) about what to watch out for in case of blockages and just about constipation in general. He was a total jerk and would hardly even look us in the face, he told us that kids don't start potty learning on their own till 3 or 4 and that he didn't believe that we weren't pushing her. I was so outraged. Then he told us that this would probably be quite the issue to solve and that "bribing her with M&M's" was a great thing to do. Not only am I not ok with bribery I am NOT going to give my constipated kid candy!!!
We left there and went back to our place to find that the power was still off, it had gone off somewhere between 6-9 am and it was getting really cold in our place. We decided to stick with the plan and go to visit our family (3 hours away) anyway because Pea had finally pooped and because we had no power. We also thought it would be a good distraction for her and some moral support for us. Thankfully it was both of those things but we still struggled through the weekend everytime she had to poo. On sunday in another moment of desperation we gave another suppository because we were back in a bad place and she wouldn't go on her own. Everything was closed and the homeopathic remedy we got on Saturday wasn't working for her. Sunday improved a bit after that but we decided to stay another night to talk to a natural pharmacist.
Monday morning we went to a consult with a natural pharmacist who specializes in naturopathy and chinese medicine, we told him our experience and he had some great recommendations. He told us as a back up to use a suppository if nothing else is working, he said that in acute situations they do more good then harm and that its much better to relieve her pain and get the stool out. Luckily we haven't had to do this again, it seems to be clearing up. The pharmacist gave us a homeopathic remedy to help with gas, magnesium to help her go, two different homeopathics to help her get over the fear of going, flax seed oil to add to her food, and her told us to up her probiotics and stick to foods that will encourage soft stool.
So far, so good and it seems we are on the upswing. I am so glad we talked to him and got reassurance and some things to try.
More things to write later but I'm exhausted and need to lay with her while she naps....
I have so been there, with Ben and it is no fun but it works itself out (pardon the pun). Suppositories really do help as well as unpleasant as they are for all. Hang in there! <3 Erin
